At the time of writing this article, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has listed eight high-intensity artificial sweeteners that it has approved. However, even though they are approved, it does not mean they are safe to consume. A growing amount of research continues to point out the dangers of artificial sweeteners. This is because of artificial sweeteners’ harmful effects on the body. They have also been reported to be addictive because they change the chemistry of the brain.

Why Are Artificial Sweeteners Dangerous?

They are dangerous because they have been linked to several severe conditions that include but are not limited to:

  • Arthritis
  • Digestive disorders
  • Heart disease
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Depression
  • Cancer
  • Weight gain
  • Binge eating
  • Increased food cravings
  • Increased appetite
  • High blood sugar
  • Type 2 diabetes

And many others.

Type 2 Diabetes

The first artificial sweetener to be established in the market in the U.S. was saccharin. It was hailed as ideal for people with Type 2 diabetes because they must be careful about regulating their blood sugar levels. 

On the other hand, a lot of research has indicated that saccharin still significantly impacts blood sugar levels despite not having any calories. People who use many products with saccharin seem more prone to diabetes, weight gain, and insulin problems. These people have also been found to want more sweeteners, leading to increased appetite challenges. 

Brain Chemistry Alterations

Aspartame can be found everywhere these days. For example, NutraSweet’s brand name and symbol appear on more and more pre-packaged foods. Furthermore, research has indicated that it can become one of the most harmful substances a person can ingest due to how the body processes it.

When it is broken down and digested, it turns into formaldehyde, an embalming fluid used to preserve dead bodies. Furthermore, it also turns into formic acid, a highly inflammatory venom found in certain insects such as fire ants.

Aspartame is also associated with the following:

  • Memory loss
  • Anxiety attacks
  • Vertigo
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Dizziness
  • Migraine headaches

Its main ingredients interfere with the craving and reward centers of the brain to the point where the drive to get something sweet, a reward, gets greater and greater. As a result, some have compared the desire for sweets to an addiction to those who use heroin or cocaine.

There are many safe, natural alternatives to sugar. If you have been struggling with eating or mood disorders, or your weight, it might be time to axe artificial sweeteners from your diet and see what a world difference it can make.
